Best VPS For VPN

A VPN can be set up and operated on both a Linux and a Windows Virtual Server.

For the Windows Virtual Server, the use of PPTP is the easiest way to establish a VPN. This connection type is not as secure as L2TP or IPsec, but it is sufficient for many applications. Setting up your own VPN Server in a secure way is not easy at all. If you do not really know how to do it, one of the providers reviewed on this VPN site might be helpful for you: www.vpncomparison.org.

PPTP-based VPN traffic consists of a TCP connection to TCP port 1723 on the VPN server and GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation) encapsulated packets for the VPN data. However, PPTP traffic can cause problems with firewalls, NATs and web proxies. To avoid this, firewalls must be configured to allow both TCP connection and GRE-encapsulated data.

With Linux Virtual Server, for example, the tunnels can be set up with OpenVPN.

Which VPN solution can I implement with a Windows Virtual Server?

Windows Server 2008 and older:

Can I install OpenVPN on my Windows VPS?

No. Unfortunately, the software cannot handle the virtual TUN/TAP driver yet. This is not the case on Linux systems.

So you can only install OpenVPN on a Linux Virtual Private Server.

Can I implement routing and RAS/PPTP/IPSec/L2TP scenarios?

All VPN scenarios for which only one NIC is required would be conceivable. IPSec connections with certificates or static keys as well as incoming PPTP connections are possible.

Install VPN Functionality (Server 2008)

Install the role “Network Policy and Access Services” via Start > Administration > Server Manager. Click on Roles and then click on “Add Role” on the right side. Now click on “Next” and select “Network Policy and Access Services” in the following dialog, then click “Next”. Please follow the instructions on the following page before proceeding with “Next”. Select “Routing and Ras” -> “RAS” and click “Next”, confirm with “Install”.

The setup should automatically enter the necessary connection rules in the firewall.

Configuring VPN Functionality (Server 2008)

coding

Now expand the “Roles” item in the Server Manager and then the “Network Policy and Access Services” item. Click on “Routing and RAS” and then on “Further Actions” on the right side under Actions and then on “Configure and activate Routing and RAS”.

Confirm the “Welcome” page and select “Custom Configuration” and select “VPN Access”. All other configurations require two network rrrcc cards, which we cannot offer for technical reasons with the virtual servers.

IP Configuration for File Sharing

After activating Routing and RAS, you can configure the IPs that the server and the client should use for the connections via the properties of Routing and RAS in the IPv4 tab. For future connections, the server usually gets the first IP from the configured range.

In the IP range 186.204.0.10 to 186.204.0.11, for example, the server gets the IP 186.204.0.10. This can be used to connect shares \186.204.0.10\

Allow Users to access

The dial-in is now possible but no user has access to the server. All you now have to do is allow users to dial in.

To do this, expand the “Configuration” branch in the Server Manager and then “Local Users and Groups” and click on the Users folder. Select the user who is to be granted the right to log on to the server and click on “Further actions” under “Actions” on the right and then on Properties.

Under the tab “Dial in” you can check “Allow network access” to allow the user access.

Simultaneous Use of Internet and Dial-Up Connection

As soon as you are logged into the VPN, all network requests are forwarded to your server. However, since you may still want to access web pages via your Internet connection, you must exclude the HTTP protocol from this. You configure this in the settings of the VPN client. There, deactivate the option “Use default gateway for remote network” under the network settings for IPv4.

Safety Notices

Please note that the PPTP protocol is considered unsafe and it is recommended to use the L2TP protocol. To obtain at least the highest level of security, configure the EAP-MSCHAPv2 authentication in the VPN client and use a secure password.

So What should you look for when searching for the Best VPS for VPN?

Of course, providers should attach great importance to security. On the one hand, these can be guaranteed by highly secure data centers. Customer data should be protected from loss, theft, water, fire and other conceivable dangers. These include backups, monitoring, rescue systems, automatic reinstallations, system images and some other measures.

Some providers also have CPU, disk space, disk read/write access, bandwidth and traffic monitored.

Help & Support

Even if VPS customers are able to manage most things themselves, they are often – especially in emergency situations – dependent on competent and easily accessible support. That is why we also evaluate the support that the various providers provide to their customers in the test. This includes, for example, what contact possibilities are available and how competent the assistance is.

So a VPS provider should present an extensive FAQ area on his site for the first attempt. Also a forum, in which both beginners and professional web page operators can exchange themselves, worked satisfactorily. A blog with solutions or information about new products can also help.

Even more important, however, is personal contact, preferably via several channels: e-mail, chat and a hotline with competent and friendly staff provide very good providers for their customers seven days a week.

Our Conclusion

Ultimately, it cannot be denied that a successful website depends very much on reliable hosting. Often a simple shared hosting package is no longer enough, but a dedicated server is still too much of a good thing. This is where virtual servers come in – and they do so successfully. This is not surprising, as VPS have many advantages.

The costs are low, the performance is strong and many wishes can be realized. We identified the best packages and compared them to identify strengths and weaknesses and make the decision easier.
